Italian court sentences Brazilian soccer star Robinho to 9 years jail term for rape

An Italian court has sentenced the former Manchester City and Brazil forward Robinho in absentia to nine years in prison after convicting him of taking part in a gang rape of an Albanian woman in 2013. A Milan court ruled that Robinho and five other Brazilians assaulted the woman, who was 22 at the time, after plying her with alcohol in a discotheque. The whereabouts of Robinho's five companions is not known, so their trial has been put on hold. Robinho, 33, who played for Milan from 2010-2015 and is currently with Atlético Mineiro in Brazil , pleaded not guilty via his lawyer and did not appear at any of the court hearings in northern Italy. “We would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode,” said a statement posted on Robinho's Instagram feed. “All legal measures are being taken.” Robinho has a right to two appeals and Italy would seek extradition only once this ...

His Imperial Majesty, King Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ile-Ife, has visited Birmingham City University today (Friday 24 November) as he seeks to strengthen ties between the UK institution and the more than 40 million people he represents in Africa. He is the 51st Ooni of the Yoruba people – most of whom live in Nigeria – and was selected from 21 contenders to the throne in 2015. ASUP Indefinite Strike May Be Called Off Next Week

T here are indications that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, may call off its 10-day old strike next week. The Union has been able to meet with the Minister of Education and from what transpired in the meeting, it was a fruitful discussion. At the moment , process is ongoing for the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed. The union leader will be meeting next week to deliberate on the negotiations with the Federal Government so far and hopefully bring the strike to an end. Recall that ASUP commenced nationwide indefinite strike on November 13 due to the federal government’s failure to fulfill the outstanding agreement made with it.

WAEC Releases Nov/Dec GCE 2017 Result - See Statistics

The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) yesterday released the results of the 2017 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE November/December) for private candidates. This was announced by the council’s Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Olu Adenipekun, at a news conference in Katsina. According to him, 135,945 candidates registered for the examination, but 133,223 wrote the test. A break down shows that 65,483 candidates obtained credits and above in five subjects and 46,824 obtained credits and above in six subjects. Adenipekun said 131,485 candidates that sat for the examination had their results fully processed and released. He said 1,738 candidates had yet to have their full results released because they had a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to them in the course of registration or writing the examination. “Such errors are being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates get their results...

JAMB POSTPONE SALES OF 2018 UTME REGISTRATION FORMS

T he Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has suspended the sale of the 2018 application forms earlier scheduled to commence on Wednesday, November 22. The spokesperson of the board, Fabian Benjamin, said this in a press statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday evening. He noted that the postponement was due to the delay in meeting the agreed deadline by the publisher of the compulsory reading text meant for prospective candidates for the 2018 UTME. The board said the publisher had promised to deliver all the texts on or before the November, 7, 2017. “As at close of work today, the publisher had not provided the 1.8 million copies required and this development painfully forced to the Board to shift the date from Wednesday 22nd November, 2017 to a date to be announced soon. ”JAMB said it regrets all inconvenience occasioned by this postponement as it is working round the clock to announce a new date soon”, the statement said. ASUP Strike Update: Poly Lecturers To Begin Industrial Action

Polytechnic ASUP Strike To Begin Next Week Nationwide. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) says it will embark on an indefinite strike with effect from Monday, November 13, unless the Federal Government pays its 2016 shortfalls and all outstanding arrears. The National President of the Union, Mr Usman Dutse gave the strike notice while briefing newsmen on the outcome of ASUP National Executive Council Emergency meeting in Abuja on Monday. He said the union would sustain the strike until the demands of the union are met or an implementable memorandum of action was agreed on. “Our union is constrained to lament that our sector is on the verge of collapse and needs all the emergency attention it urgently deserves .” He said the union had engaged government on the poor state of the polytechnics, adding that government had set up a committee that produced a report but nothing was done about it.
